From a lifestyle point of view Phuket can be generally divided into 5 distinct areas, each with its own character. Much development has taken place along the western coast, which is now being consolidated with recognisable themes.

1. The North Western Coast. This area is where the large hotel groups have their resorts, and holiday club developments. There is a projected international conference centre due to be built in this area in the near future, which will attract hotels and high end property development.

2. This area is the traditional West Coast tourist area, with development and most local fa-cilities centred upon the tourist market. Running from Surin, through Patong Beach; the tourist capital of the island and down to Kata. Together with the north western coast, property is at its most expensive in these areas.

3. The Southern region. This area of Phuket is considerably more laid back than the rest of the west coast. While development is evident, many of the towns and villages still retain their original character. Rawai and Nai Harn still have the ambiance of sleepy fishing vil-lages, together with vibrant ex-pat communities. Chalong is very much a hub for the tour business in Phuket, drawing tourists from throughout the island for island hopping, fish-ing and diving trips. An ideal location if you are considering going into this kind of busi-ness. Cape Panwa, south of Phuket City, is also an attractive and quiet area. Prices of property here tend to carry a premium reflecting an element of exclusivity.

4. Central Phuket/Phuket City. This area really is the commercial/administrative centre of the island for those looking for a more urban lifestyle. International schools, hospitals and major shopping malls are focused in this area including Kathu and Thalang.

5. The East Coast. This area is the least developed of the island. There are some significant developments, and single villa opportunities that are very competitively priced. For those seeking a quieter life, away from, but not isolated from, the madding crowd, this area is ideal
